External Relations

External Relations serves and engages the University’s external constituencies through programs, events, and services. Our constituencies include donors, alumni, students, parents, visiting dignitaries, government officials, and the local community. We translate constituent needs and priorities into customized programs to create, enhance, and sustain relationships. We also advise the University community on all matters of protocol including visits by high-ranking government officials, the UC Office of the President, Regents, and other dignitaries.

What We Do

  • Events. External Relations plans and produces events that support the ongoing fundraising efforts of University Development and Alumni Relations and the UC Berkeley Foundation. We also manage Chancellor’s events, including public ceremonies and campuswide celebrations, and administer the Request for Time on the Chancellor’s calendar.
  • Donor recognition. Our office develops donor recognition programs and strategies. This includes annual events and activities for the Builders of Berkeley, UC Berkeley Foundation, Charter Hill Society, and Benjamin Ide Wheeler Society.
  • Campuswide coordination, support, and consultation. We produce and maintain the Campuswide Advancement Events Calendar that lists all of the University’s major donor events and programs, coordinate the Chancellor’s football box guests, coordinate and support the department graduations, and produce the annual UC Berkeley Event Certificate training program.
  • Awards. Our office manages the University’s Awards Program. The four highest honors that the University bestows are the Berkeley Medal, the Berkeley Citation, the Chancellor’s Citation, and the Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award. In addition, two awards recognize alumni who have been devoted to the betterment of society: the Peter E. Haas Public Service Award and the Elise and Walter A. Haas International Award. Finally, we also administer the University Volunteer Awards program, which comprises the Charter Gala and Homecoming Awards.
  • Strategic partnerships. We work to improve the University’s global reach and brand positioning to ultimately achieve financial growth. In concert with the Chancellor’s office, we define long-term strategic goals, build key campus relationships, identify business opportunities, and negotiate and pass business deals to appropriate units on campus. We work to maintain extensive knowledge of current campus discoveries, breakthroughs, and faculty research in all disciplines. Our department plans persuasive approaches and pitches that will convince potential partners to highlight and showcase UC Berkeley’s Chancellor, his initiatives, and our esteemed faculty.
